Why Joshua Tree is Perfect for Your Adventure Session
Planning a couples shoot or engagement in Joshua Tree? We’ve got your back—tips, timing, and what to wear.
If you're dreaming of golden sunsets, surreal desert vibes, and an experience that feels equal parts romantic and epic—Joshua Tree National Park might be calling your name. Whether you're planning an engagement, anniversary, or just want to document your love in a wild, beautiful place, this park delivers an unforgettable backdrop.
As elopement photographers based in California, we’ve spent countless golden hours in Joshua Tree, capturing couples among the giant boulders, twisted Joshua trees, and glowing desert light. Here’s what you need to know to make your Joshua Tree adventure session amazing:
Why Joshua Tree?
Joshua Tree offers a dreamy mix of rugged and romantic. Think sun-drenched rocks, towering trees that look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book, and skies that turn peachy pink every evening. The wide-open space creates room to breathe, explore, and be fully present with your partner—no distractions, just connection and light.
Best Time of Year to Visit
Fall (October–November) and Spring (March–April) are ideal.
The temperatures are comfortable, and the light is chef’s kiss—soft, golden, and magical.Winter brings chilly nights but gorgeous clarity, and far fewer crowds.
Summer? Beautiful but very hot. We don’t recommend mid-day sessions in July or August unless you're okay with sweating (a lot).
Timing is Everything
Golden hour (about 1–2 hours before sunset) is when the magic happens. The rocks start to glow, the shadows get long, and everything feels cinematic.
If you’re up for it, sunrise sessions can be equally stunning—and you’ll have the park nearly to yourself.
What to Wear
You don’t have to go full boho (unless you want to!), but here are some tips:
Flowy fabrics look amazing against the rocky backdrop and catch the wind beautifully.
Earth tones + neutrals like rust, terracotta, olive, cream, and gold blend beautifully with the desert.
Don’t forget good shoes—you might be climbing on rocks!
Bring layers: desert temps can drop fast, especially at sunset.
Pro Tips From Wyld & Wander
Permits: If your session is part of a wedding or elopement, we’ll guide you through the permit process. Regular portrait sessions typically don’t require one, but we’ll always double check for you.
Plan for wind! It adds so much energy to your images, but a little prep (like extra bobby pins or a hair tie) goes a long way.
Build in time to explore. Some of the best spots are tucked away just off the main roads—we’ll help you find them.

What to Wear + Where to Wander: Your Adventure Session Guide
Where to Wander: Engagement Photo Locations + Outfit Tips
Planning an adventure engagement session that’s as epic and intentional as your love story? Whether you're climbing rocks in Joshua Tree, twirling along the cliffs of Big Sur, or watching the sunset at Laguna Beach—this guide is your go-to for what to wear, where to go, and how to feel totally confident in front of the camera.
As elopement photographers who’ve hiked, danced, and wandered with hundreds of couples, we know that when you feel good in your clothes and connected to your location, the magic follows.
Movement is Magic
Choose outfits you can move in—twirl, cuddle, climb, and laugh without worrying about adjusting every five seconds. Flowy dresses, soft knits, and layered textures work beautifully.
Complement, Don’t Match
We love when couples coordinate without being identical. Think earth tones, neutrals, or nature-inspired colors like olive, sand, rust, and slate blue.
Dress for the Elements
Planning a mountain shoot? Bring layers. Headed to the beach? Consider the breeze. We'll help guide you based on your location and season.
Shoes That Can Wander
Comfort is key—opt for boots, sandals, or anything that won’t slow your adventure. If you’re dying to wear heels, bring them along and swap when we get to the photo spot.
Add Personality
Accessories like hats, scarves, jackets, or even a blanket for cozy shots add variety and reflect your unique style.
Skip Logos & Loud Prints
Let the focus stay on your love—not your branding or busy patterns.
Be You
Confidence always looks amazing. Choose clothes that feel like you and bring out the version of yourself that loves fiercely and laughs freely.
